Tidying is an investment, not a chore¶
When you first hear "clean up the code," it sounds like housework: a duty, something you do because a senior told you to, with no real payoff except a tidier feeling. That framing is wrong, and it will steer your career badly if you keep it.
Tidying is an investment. You spend a little effort now so that a future change costs less. That is the same shape as putting money in a savings account, or buying a good knife so every meal you cook afterward is faster. You pay up front. You collect the return later, a bit at a time, every time you touch that code.
Key idea: A tidying is effort spent now to lower the cost of changes later. It is only worth doing when the savings later are bigger than the cost now.
That last sentence is the entire topic in one line. Everything else — the formulas, the "time value of money," the talk about options — is just a more careful way of answering one question: will this small cleanup pay me back, and how soon?
The reason this matters is that you have a limited budget of time and attention. You cannot tidy everything. If you treat tidying as a chore, you will either skip it entirely (and drown in mess) or do it everywhere (and never ship). Treating it as an investment lets you do the right amount in the right places.
A quick contrast in vocabulary, because juniors mix these up constantly:

Tidying lives in the "no behavior change" column with refactoring. This topic is not about which tidyings exist; it is about whether the money makes sense.
Why cleaner code is cheaper to change¶
To reason about the economics, you first need to believe one claim: cleaner code is cheaper to change. Let's make that concrete rather than taking it on faith.
When you change code, your time goes into two different buckets:
- The change itself — typing the new logic. This is the part the user actually wanted.
- Understanding and navigating the code around it — reading, tracing what calls what, figuring out which of five almost-identical blocks to edit, holding the tangle in your head without breaking something else.
For a clean piece of code, bucket 1 dominates. For a messy piece, bucket 2 dominates — often by a lot. You might spend 10 minutes writing the actual change and 90 minutes understanding the mess you must change it inside of.
Cost of a change ≈ cost of the change itself

Tidying attacks the second term. It does nothing for the first — the new logic is the same number of lines either way. What it does is shrink the "understanding and navigating" tax that you pay on top of every future change. Lower the tax once, collect the saving on every change that comes through that code afterward.
This is why a senior engineer can look at a function and say "that's expensive to change" before writing a single line. They are estimating the second term: how tangled, how surprising, how much you must hold in your head. A worked feeling for it: imagine the same one-line bug fix in two functions. In a clean 20-line function with clear names, you read it top to bottom once, find the line, fix it, and you're done in five minutes. In a 200-line function with five nested conditions, three variables all named data, and a comment that lies, you spend forty minutes just convincing yourself you understand it well enough to not break the other four code paths — and then five minutes on the fix. Same fix. Eight times the cost. None of that extra cost was the fix; all of it was the navigation tax.
Two ideas drive that tax, and you will see them in every later file:
- Coupling — how much one piece of code depends on others. High coupling means a change here forces changes (or careful checking) over there. More places to touch, more to hold in your head.
- Cohesion — how well the things inside one unit belong together. High cohesion means the thing you need to change is all in one place. Low cohesion means it is smeared across the codebase.
You will study these properly in the design-principles section (../../design-principles/). For now keep the slogan: tidying usually means lowering coupling or raising cohesion, and that is exactly what makes the next change cheaper.
A first worked example: cost-now vs cost-later¶
Numbers make this real. Suppose you are about to add a feature to a function. Right now the function is messy: the logic you need to touch is duplicated in three near-identical if branches.
Option A — change it as-is (no tidying). Because the logic is in three places, you must find all three, edit all three, and make sure they stay consistent. You estimate:
Option B — tidy first, then change. You spend 15 minutes pulling the three branches into one shared helper (a small, safe tidying). Then the actual feature touches one place instead of three:
Already Option B is cheaper today: 35 minutes versus 50. That happens more often than juniors expect — sometimes tidying pays back on the very same change, because the change is easier once the mess is gone.
But the real story is the future. Say this area gets touched again three more times this quarter. Each future change is also cheaper after the tidy, because there is now one place to edit, not three. Put rough numbers on it:

The tidy cost 15 minutes and saved 105 minutes across four changes. That is the investment paying off. The more often this code is touched, the bigger the payoff — which is the single most important rule of thumb in this whole topic:
Key idea: Tidy the code you are about to change again and again. Code you touch often is where cleanup pays back fastest. Code you almost never touch is where it usually does not.
The two questions behind every tidying¶
Before you tidy, ask yourself two plain questions. They are the junior-level version of the full economic analysis you'll meet in later files.
- How much does this tidying cost me right now? (minutes of work + risk of breaking something)
- How soon, and how often, will it pay me back? (how likely am I — or a teammate — to change this same code again, and soon?)
If the answer is "cheap to do, and I'm about to change this exact code again very soon," tidy. That is a great bet. If the answer is "expensive to do, and nobody will touch this for a year," don't. That is a bad bet.
Notice the word soon. A saving you collect next week is worth more than the same saving five years from now — partly because plans change, code gets deleted, priorities shift, and partly because near savings are simply more certain. The grown-up name for this is the time value of money, and the middle and senior files build on it. For now, the junior version is: prefer tidyings that pay back on the next change, not in some distant maybe-future.
Tidying as a bet on the future¶
Here is a mental model that will carry you a long way. A tidying is a bet. You are wagering a small, certain cost (the minutes to do it) against an uncertain future saving (the changes you might make later).
Some bets are great:
- The cost is tiny (a one-minute rename).
- The payoff is near and likely (you are literally about to edit this code, right now, for the third time this week).
Some bets are bad:
- The cost is large (restructuring a whole module).
- The payoff is far away and uncertain (you think this area might get a feature next year, maybe).
A good engineer is not the one who tidies the most. It is the one who makes the best bets — who spends cleanup effort where it is cheap and the return is near and likely, and who walks past the mess that does not pay. Senior engineers call this property optionality, and the senior.md file is devoted to it. The junior takeaway: tidying you can do in a minute, on code you're about to change anyway, is almost always a winning bet — take it.
Two small habits make these bets pay off in practice. First, tie every tidying to a change you're actually making. If you're not editing the code right now and have no near-term reason to, the "future change" you're betting on is imaginary, and imaginary returns are worth nothing. Second, keep tidyings small and separate from the real change. Do the rename in its own commit; do the feature in the next one. Small steps are cheap to make, easy for a teammate to review, and easy to undo if you were wrong — which lowers the risk of the bet without lowering the payoff. You'll see these two habits become formal rules in the later files, but you can start using them today.
When tidying is not worth it¶
Because tidying is an investment, some investments are bad. There is a whole region of code where the correct economic answer is never tidy. Recognizing it early will save you from looking busy while wasting the team's money.
Do not tidy when:
- The code is about to be deleted or replaced. Polishing a room you're about to demolish is pure waste. The return is zero — there is no future change to make cheaper.
- You will not touch this code again. No future changes means no future savings. Even free-feeling cleanup is not free: it costs review time, risks a bug, and pollutes the change history.
- The code is genuinely stable. If something hasn't changed in two years and isn't on any roadmap, it is paying its own way as-is. Leave it.
- You're not actually changing anything nearby. "Drive-by" tidying of code you have no reason to touch buries your real change in noise and makes the diff hard to review.

Key idea: "Never tidy" is a legitimate, professional answer — for stable code, doomed code, and code you have no reason to touch. The skill is not tidying everything; it is tidying the right things.

A simple chart helps fix the four cases in your mind. The two axes are how cheap is the tidying and how soon/likely is the payback.

Most of your day lives in the top-left box: small cleanups on code you're changing anyway. Take those. Most regret lives in the bottom-right box: big, speculative cleanups whose payoff never comes. Avoid those.
And one last reframing from Beck that you should carry forward, even though it sounds soft for an "economics" topic: the reason any of this matters is the people. Cheaper-to-change code means the next human — often future-you — can keep moving without dread. The numbers are a tool for serving the humans who must keep changing the software. Software design is an exercise in human relationships, and the economics is how we argue about it honestly.
