Square Root Decomposition & Mo's Algorithm — Senior Level¶
Read time: ~25 minutes · Audience: Senior engineers deciding between sqrt-decomp, segment trees, and B-tree-style fanout in production. CP veterans who have used Mo and want the broader systems context.
At senior level, the question is not "how does it work" but "when is sqrt-decomposition the right tool in a system, and what other systems already use it (often without calling it that)?". This page covers production usage, the relationship to B-tree fanout, cache-conscious blocking in numerical libraries, and the underappreciated reality that sqrt-decomp can beat segment trees in real benchmarks for small-to-medium n.

1. Mo's Algorithm in Competitive Programming and Beyond¶
Mo's algorithm is the canonical offline-query technique in competitive programming for problems like:
- "Count distinct values in
arr[l..r]" (SPOJ DQUERY). - "K-th smallest value in
arr[l..r]" (with wavelet trees or persistent segment trees as alternatives; Mo is simpler). - "Mode (most frequent value) in
arr[l..r]" (Codeforces 86D). - "Sum of squares of frequencies in
arr[l..r]" (Codeforces 86D — same problem, alternate framing). - "Number of subarrays of
[l, r]with XOR == k" (often reduces to a frequency count over prefix XORs).
In each case, the per-element add/remove is O(1) if you can maintain the aggregate incrementally — count of frequency 1, count of pairs (i,j) with arr[i]==arr[j], sum of freq[v]², etc.
1.1 Mo outside competitive programming¶
The pattern shows up in real systems:
- Search log analysis. Given a sequence of user search events with values (e.g., query terms), and a workload of "for the time range
[t1, t2], how many distinct query terms?", Mo's algorithm beats per-range scans by an order of magnitude when many overlapping ranges are queried in batch. - Offline scoring engines. Recommendation systems often score user-item pairs over arbitrary time windows. If the scoring function is incrementally maintainable, the entire batch can be processed via Mo.
- Static dataset analytics (e.g., notebook-style ad-hoc analyses): once the data is loaded, all queries are known; the analyst's ad-hoc selections can be batched and answered in
O((n+q)√n)rather thanO(n·q). - Time-series compaction. Database internals sometimes use Mo-like reordering to coalesce overlapping range scans into one pass with minimal pointer motion.
The catch is the offline requirement. Online systems with real-time queries cannot use Mo directly, but they can batch within a window (e.g., process every 100 ms worth of queries together) and amortize.
1.2 Mo's algorithm is "merge sort for windows"¶
Conceptually, Mo's algorithm reduces total pointer motion from O(n·q) to O((n+q)·√n) by exploiting a partial order on queries — just as merge sort exploits the order of two sub-sorted lists. The technique generalizes: any "two-pointer" subroutine that costs O(n) per query can be amortized down via similar reorderings (this is the broader idea of offline batch processing of range problems).
2. Sqrt-Decomposition in B-Tree Lineage¶
A B-tree of degree B is essentially a hierarchy of sqrt-decompositions:
- A leaf node holds up to
Bkeys (one bucket). - An internal node summarizes its
Bchildren (per-bucket aggregate: smallest key in each child). - A 2-level B-tree has
B²total keys withO(B + log B) = O(B)worst-case search. - A 3-level B-tree has
B³total keys withO(B + log B + log B) = O(B + log²B)worst-case search.
When B = √n, you get a 2-level structure with O(√n) per query — exactly sqrt-decomposition. When B = n^(1/3), you get a 3-level structure with O(n^(1/3)) per query — √n√n decomposition. The pattern continues; pushing to log n levels gives a true B-tree with O(log_B n) query.
Early disk-based databases (1970s) used exactly this 2-level "sqrt-fanout" structure because disk seeks dominated; each level was one seek. The classic ISAM (Indexed Sequential Access Method) structure was a sqrt-decomposition over physical disk blocks.
Modern B-trees and B+-trees push to log_B n levels with B chosen as block_size / key_size (typically 100–500 keys per node on disk, 8–64 in-memory). The fundamental idea — partition into B buckets with one aggregate per bucket — is identical to sqrt-decomposition.
3. Skip-Lists as Log-Bucketing¶
A skip list is essentially multi-level sqrt-decomposition with random level choice instead of fixed √n:
- Level 0: every element.
- Level 1: ~half the elements, randomly chosen, with
1/p = 2typically. - Level 2: ~quarter of level 1, etc.
- Level
log n: just a few elements, providing "highway" pointers.
To search, traverse the highway down. Total expected work O(log n).
This is sqrt-decomposition where the bucket size is randomized rather than fixed, and the per-bucket aggregate is implicit in the higher-level pointer. The connection is more than analogy: deterministic skip lists with B = 2 levels give exactly the sqrt-decomp performance.
4. Cache-Conscious Blocking — BLAS GEMM¶
Dense matrix multiply (C = A · B) on an n×n matrix is naively O(n³) operations. The naive triple-loop version is cache-disastrous: it touches each row of A and each column of B, both larger than L1.
The standard fix: block the matrices into √cache_size × √cache_size tiles. Then compute C_{tile} += A_{tile} · B_{tile} with all three tiles resident in cache. This is sqrt-decomposition applied to memory hierarchy, with B = √(L1_size / element_size).
OpenBLAS, MKL, BLIS, and cuBLAS all use exactly this technique. For tiered cache hierarchies (L1 < L2 < L3 < RAM), they nest: an L1-tile inside an L2-tile inside an L3-tile. The block sizes are tuned per CPU.
Same principle: divide into √cache chunks, summarize/accumulate per chunk, total work scales with the chunk count which is sub-linear in the input. The sqrt-decomp pattern is everywhere it would speed things up — software engineers just don't always recognize it.
5. When Sqrt-Decomp Beats Segment Tree¶
Asymptotically, O(√n) > O(log n). So segment trees should always win, right? Not in practice.
5.1 Cache and branch prediction¶
A segment tree has unpredictable memory access — each query descends log n levels touching nodes scattered through memory. Branch prediction misses on every comparison.
A sqrt-decomp query does: - A linear scan over a partial bucket (B elements). The CPU prefetcher loves this; branch prediction is near-perfect. - A linear scan over n/B bucket aggregates. Same story.
For n ≤ 10⁵, the segment tree's log n ≈ 17 levels with cache misses can be slower than the sqrt-decomp's 2·316 = 632 cache-friendly operations.
5.2 Empirical numbers¶
On a modern CPU (Apple M-series or Intel-12th-gen), a careful benchmark on n = 10⁵ random ints:

These are illustrative — exact numbers depend on implementation — but the direction is consistent. The crossover where segment tree pulls ahead is around n = 10⁶.
5.3 Vectorizability¶
The partial-bucket scan in sqrt-decomp is a tight inner loop that auto-vectorizes (or can be manually SIMDed — see professional.md). Segment tree's recursive descent cannot be vectorized.
5.4 Conclusion¶
For n ≤ 10⁵ with simple aggregates (sum, min, max), sqrt-decomp is often the better choice in production, not just in homework. The 25 lines of code vs 60 also matters: less code, fewer bugs, faster review.
6. Persistent Sqrt-Decomposition¶
A persistent structure preserves all previous versions across updates — useful for time-travel queries ("what was the sum on day 5?") and rollback semantics.
Segment trees admit clean persistence via path copying: an update touches log n nodes, copies them, leaves the rest shared. Memory: O(log n) per update.
Sqrt-decomp can be made persistent but less elegantly:
- Copy-on-write per bucket: an update to bucket
bcreates a fresh copy of bucketband its aggregate; other buckets share. Memory:O(B + 1) = O(√n)per update. Total memory acrossuupdates:O(u·√n). Foru = 10⁵andn = 10⁵:~3·10⁷words. Feasible. - Fully persistent rope-style structure: each bucket is itself a persistent structure (a persistent BIT, e.g.). Achievable but the code blows up.
For most use cases where you want time travel, persistent segment trees beat persistent sqrt-decomp. Sqrt-decomp shines when persistence is not required.
7. Production Use Cases¶
7.1 OLAP-style cube aggregates¶
Pre-aggregating large fact tables into 2D blocks (city × hour, e.g.) gives sqrt-decomp-like behavior: each query touches a few partial tiles and many full tiles. Apache Druid's segment design and ClickHouse's part-based storage both incorporate variations.
7.2 Log search bucketing¶
Splunk-style indexed log search divides time into "buckets" of fixed duration. Per-bucket aggregates (term frequency, error counts) accelerate range queries dramatically. This is sqrt-decomposition with time as the array.
7.3 Game engine spatial partitioning¶
A uniform grid of √n × √n cells, each cell holding a list of objects inside it, supports O(√n) range queries over a 2D world. Used in particle simulation, broad-phase collision detection. More sophisticated structures (quadtrees, R-trees — covered later in the chapter) outperform this asymptotically but the grid wins for uniform distributions due to constant factors.
7.4 SCM bisect-style debugging¶
git bisect is binary search, but git blame for a range of lines and git log -L use per-blob block summaries that are effectively sqrt-decomp over commits.
7.5 Financial tick aggregation¶
For high-frequency tick data, aggregations like "VWAP from time T1 to T2" are answered via per-minute bars (buckets) with cached aggregates. Range queries combine partial first/last minutes with full middle minutes' aggregates — textbook sqrt-decomp.
8. Summary¶
- Sqrt-decomposition's fingerprints are all over computer systems: B-tree fanout, BLAS GEMM blocking, OLAP cube aggregates, time-series rollups, spatial grids, and skip-list shortcut levels.
- For small-to-medium
n, sqrt-decomp outperforms segment trees in practice due to cache locality, branch prediction, and vectorizability, despite worse asymptotics. - Mo's algorithm extends sqrt-decomp to offline batch processing of
qrange queries, achievingO((n+q)√n)for a broad class of incrementally-maintainable aggregates. - Persistence is awkward in sqrt-decomp compared to segment trees; for time-travel use cases, prefer persistent segment trees.
- In production, batched offline queries on static datasets are the sweet spot for Mo-style techniques.
