Fenwick Tree — Middle Level¶
Audience: Engineers who already have the basic BIT (point update + prefix sum) at their fingertips and want the variant family used in competitive programming and production. Prerequisite:
junior.md.
This document covers the standard extension family of Fenwick trees: range-update + point-query via a difference BIT, range-update + range-query via the classic two-BIT trick, 2D BITs for point update + rectangle query, 2D range-update + range-query with four BITs, BIT for inversion counting (the LeetCode 315 pattern), order-statistic / kth-smallest via binary lifting on the BIT in O(log n), the XOR variant, and a head-to-head benchmark against segment trees on identical workloads. By the end you should reach for the right BIT variant from memory in any "prefix-aggregate with updates" problem.

1. Range Update + Point Query via Difference BIT¶
Sometimes the workload flips: many range updates ("add 5 to A[l..r]") and many point queries ("what is A[i] now?"). A naive range update touches O(r - l + 1) cells; we want O(log n).
The trick is a difference array. Define d[i] = A[i] - A[i-1] (with A[0] = 0). Then A[i] = d[1] + d[2] + ... + d[i] = prefix-sum of d at i.
A range update A[l..r] += v corresponds to only two point updates on d: d[l] += v and d[r+1] -= v. Everything in between stays the same because the consecutive differences don't change.
Store d in a BIT. Then:

Use this whenever updates dominate over queries and queries are point-only. Common in interval-coloring problems.
2. Range Update + Range Query via Two BITs¶
Now the hardest case: both updates and queries are over ranges. The famous two-BIT trick achieves O(log n) for both.
The math¶
Let A be the current array and let d[i] = A[i] - A[i-1] be the difference array. A range update A[l..r] += v translates to d[l] += v and d[r+1] -= v (same as above). A range query prefix(i) = A[1] + A[2] + ... + A[i] is, by definition of d:

So prefix(i) is a linear combination of the prefix sum of d and the prefix sum of j · d[j]. If we maintain two BITs — B1 storing d[j] and B2 storing j · d[j] — then:

wait, sign: prefix(i) = i · B1.prefix(i) − B2.prefix(i) + B1.prefix(i)
= (i + 1) · B1.prefix(i) − B2.prefix(i)
Equivalently many texts write it as prefix(i) = i * B1.prefix(i) - B2.prefix(i) with a slightly different setup; both are valid. We'll use the form below that pairs cleanly with the range-update formulas.
Range update on the two BITs¶
For an update A[l..r] += v:
The first pair is exactly the difference-array trick. The second pair maintains the Σ j · d[j] invariant.
Prefix and range queries¶

This costs twice the memory of one BIT but is still half a segment tree with lazy propagation and is far less code.
3. 2D BIT — Fenwick of Fenwicks¶
Maintain a 2D matrix A[1..n][1..m] under point updates and rectangle-prefix queries. Build a 2D array BIT[1..n][1..m] where the outer index uses BIT logic and the inner index does too:

Java and Python translations are identical structure. Memory is O(n · m), same as the matrix.
When to use 2D BIT¶
- Image processing: integral image with point updates (rare; usually integral images are static).
- 2D range counting in computational geometry after coordinate compression.
- Heatmap aggregation in time-windowed analytics.
For static 2D prefix sum (no updates), don't use a 2D BIT — use a precomputed integral image (O(1) per query).
4. 2D Range Update + Range Query with Four BITs¶
Generalize section 2 to two dimensions. We need four 2D BITs to maintain the analogue of the linear-combination formula. The math gets long; we sketch it.
For a rectangle update on [r1..r2][c1..c2] adding v:

B2 maintains row-weighted sums similarly

Then prefix(r, c) = (r + 1)(c + 1) · B1.prefix - (c + 1) · B2.prefix - (r + 1) · B3.prefix + B4.prefix.
This is the upper bound of what a Fenwick tree can do cleanly. Beyond this, a 2D segment tree with 2D lazy propagation is often the better choice despite its complexity. We give the full implementation in tasks.md, task 5 extended; here we just note it exists.
5. Inversion Count via BIT + Coordinate Compression¶
Inversion count is one of the most-asked BIT applications. Given an array A[1..n], count pairs (i, j) with i < j and A[i] > A[j]. Brute force is O(n²). Merge-sort-based count is O(n log n). BIT also achieves O(n log n) and is often easier to extend.
Algorithm¶
Walk the array left to right. For each A[i], the number of inversions ending at i equals the number of previously seen values greater than A[i]. Maintain a BIT keyed by rank of value seen. To insert A[i], do bit.update(rank(A[i]), 1). The number of previous values > A[i] is (i - 1) - bit.prefix(rank(A[i])). Accumulate.
Because values may be arbitrary, coordinate-compress first: sort distinct values, replace each value with its rank in [1..k] where k = #distinct.

Time: O(n log n). Memory: O(n). This pattern generalizes to: counting elements in any range (using rangeSum), counting elements equal to a value (using update + prefix), and many sliding-window-statistics problems.
6. Order Statistic / Kth Smallest via Binary Lifting on BIT¶
Problem. Maintain a multiset of integers under insertions and deletions, and answer "what is the kth smallest right now?" Each value's frequency is stored in a BIT keyed by rank.
The two-pass solution is O(log² n): binary-search the rank r such that bit.prefix(r) >= k. Each check costs O(log n); the outer binary search is O(log n). Decent but not optimal.
The binary lifting on BIT solution is O(log n). The idea: descend the implicit tree from the highest power of two ≤ n down to 1, greedily including or excluding each level.
The trick¶
Start with idx = 0 and remaining = k. Let LOG = floor(log2(n)). For each bit from LOG down to 0:
After the loop, idx + 1 is the smallest position where the prefix sum reaches k. Each iteration is constant work; loop runs log n times. O(log n).

This is one of the most beautiful uses of the BIT and a staple of competitive programming. It unlocks problems where you need to find the median of a stream, the kth smallest of an arbitrary subset of inserted values, or perform offline order-statistic processing.
7. XOR-BIT — Replacing Sum with XOR¶
The Fenwick tree works for any invertible aggregate. XOR is its own inverse (a ^ a = 0), so:

The Go and Java translations replace += with ^= throughout.
Uses include: XOR of subarrays under updates (Codeforces 838C, 459E style problems), maintaining parity of counts, simple hash sketches.
8. Benchmark: Fenwick vs Segment Tree¶
We compare Fenwick and segment tree on identical workloads. Setup: n = 1,000,000, mixed update + range-query workload, 10 million operations total, values randomly distributed.
Typical numbers (Go, amd64, Apple M2 / Intel-grade CPU)¶

Why the gap? 1. Memory pressure. The Fenwick array sits in L2/L3; the segment tree spills into RAM. 2. Loop depth. A Fenwick prefix touches popcount(i) cells (often less than log n); a segment tree always traverses log n nodes regardless. 3. Branch predictability. Fenwick's inner loop has one comparison; segment tree has several including "does the current node fully cover the query?". 4. No recursion. Segment trees are often implemented recursively; even iterative ones have more state.
When the segment tree wins: workloads needing min/max/gcd, lazy propagation for range update + range min, or non-invertible aggregates. For pure invertible aggregates, Fenwick is the default.
