Formal Definition

Let (M, *, e) be a monoid: a set M, an associative binary operation *: M x M -> M, and an identity e such that e * x = x * e = x for all x. Given a sequence a = (a_0, a_1, ..., a_{n-1}) in M, the prefix-scan sequence is:

P_0 = e
P_i = a_0 * a_1 * ... * a_{i-1}    for i in 1..n

This is well-defined for any monoid. The question of efficient range queries — recovering a_l * a_{l+1} * ... * a_r from P_l and P_{r+1} — is more restrictive.

Definition (Range-Query-Reducible Monoid)

A monoid (M, *, e) is range-query-reducible iff for every pair (P_l, P_{r+1}) there exists an efficiently computable function f: M x M -> M such that:

f(P_{r+1}, P_l) = a_l * a_{l+1} * ... * a_r

In a group (a monoid in which every element has an inverse x^{-1} with x * x^{-1} = e), the choice f(y, x) = y * x^{-1} works. The prefix-sum technique is the group-theoretic specialization of the monoid scan.

Examples of abelian groups for prefix sum:

  • (Z, +, 0) — integers under addition. Inverse: negation.
  • (Z_p^*, ., 1) for prime p — nonzero residues under modular multiplication. Inverse: Fermat's little theorem.
  • ({0,1}^k, XOR, 0^k) — bit strings under XOR. Self-inverse.
  • (GL_n(R), ., I) — invertible n x n real matrices under multiplication. Non-commutative but still a group; range queries work with care for left vs right inverses.

Examples of semigroups (not groups) where prefix subtraction fails:

  • (N, min) — natural numbers under minimum. No inverse: knowing min(a, b) = m and b does not determine a.
  • (N, max) — symmetric.
  • (N, gcd)gcd(a, b) = 6 and b = 12 is consistent with infinitely many a.
  • ({0,1}^k, AND) and ({0,1}^k, OR) — only the all-1s and all-0s elements have inverses for the identity.

For these, sparse tables (idempotent semigroups, static) or segment trees (any associative semigroup, dynamic) replace prefix sums.


The Inverse-Required Lemma

Claim:  Let (M, *, e) be a monoid. A constant-query-time range operator
        f: M x M -> M with f(P_{r+1}, P_l) = a_l * ... * a_r for all valid
        l, r exists  iff  (M, *, e) is a group.

Proof sketch:
  (<=) If M is a group, define f(y, x) = y * x^{-1}.  By associativity,
       P_{r+1} * P_l^{-1} = (a_0 * ... * a_r) * (a_0 * ... * a_{l-1})^{-1}
                         = a_l * ... * a_r.
       (For non-abelian groups: use right inverse if scanning from the left.)

  (=>) Suppose such f exists for all sequences over M.  Fix any x in M.
       Consider the sequence a = (x).  Then P_0 = e, P_1 = x, and
       f(P_1, P_0) = f(x, e) must equal a_0 = x.  So f(x, e) = x.
       Now consider the sequence a = (x, y) where we query l=0, r=1
       (the full product) and l=1, r=1 (just y).  The second query
       gives f(P_2, P_1) = f(x*y, x) = y.  Since this must hold for
       every choice of x, the map z -> f(z, x) recovers y from x*y,
       which is precisely a left inverse of "multiply by x".  Hence x
       has a left inverse.  By symmetry (apply argument to reversed
       sequences) x has a right inverse, so x is invertible.
       Since x was arbitrary, M is a group. QED.

This formalizes why prefix sums work for sum and XOR but cannot work for min, max, GCD, AND, or OR. There is no clever encoding to be discovered; the obstruction is algebraic.


Static vs Dynamic Lower Bounds

Define the partial-sum problem: maintain an array a[0..n-1] of integers under two operations:

  • update(i, x) — set a[i] = x
  • query(l, r) — return sum(a[l..r])

Classical results in the cell-probe model (Yao, Fredman-Saks, Patrascu-Demaine):

Theorem (Fredman-Saks 1989, Patrascu-Demaine 2004):
  Any data structure for the partial-sum problem with O(log n / log log n)
  amortized update time requires Omega(log n / log log n) amortized query
  time.  In particular, no data structure achieves O(1) for both.

  In the comparison-based / arithmetic model with word size w = O(log n),
  the bound tightens to t_u + t_q = Omega(log n).

This explains the structural gap:

  • Prefix sum achieves t_q = O(1) but t_u = O(n).
  • Difference array achieves t_u = O(1) (per range update) but t_q = O(n) (until reconstructed).
  • Fenwick / segment tree achieves t_u = t_q = O(log n), matching the lower bound up to constants.

There is no asymptotically better dynamic structure for partial sums. Senior engineers internalize this: the choice of prefix vs Fenwick is not laziness — it is fundamental.


Parallel Prefix Scan

Sequential prefix sum runs in O(n) time on one processor. With p processors and parallel scan algorithms, we can do better — but the work/depth trade-off matters.

Hillis-Steele Scan (Inclusive Scan, Depth-Optimal)

Input:  a[0..n-1]  (assume n a power of 2 for clarity)
Output: prefix-sum b[0..n-1]

for d = 0 to ceil(log2(n)) - 1:
    parallel for i = 0 to n - 1:
        if i >= 2^d:
            b[i] := a[i] + a[i - 2^d]
        else:
            b[i] := a[i]
    a := b
return a

Depth (time):  O(log n)
Work:          O(n log n)

Each stage doubles the "reach" of each element's prefix. The arithmetic is performed n log n times in total, so the work is suboptimal. Hillis-Steele wins when you have many processors and depth dominates.

Blelloch Scan (Work-Optimal, Two-Phase)

Phase 1 — Up-sweep (reduce):
  Build a balanced binary tree where each internal node stores the sum
  of its subtree leaves.
  for d = 0 to log2(n) - 1:
      parallel for i = 0 to n-1 step 2^(d+1):
          a[i + 2^(d+1) - 1] += a[i + 2^d - 1]

Phase 2 — Down-sweep:
  a[n-1] := 0   (identity)
  for d = log2(n) - 1 down to 0:
      parallel for i = 0 to n-1 step 2^(d+1):
          t := a[i + 2^d - 1]
          a[i + 2^d - 1]       := a[i + 2^(d+1) - 1]
          a[i + 2^(d+1) - 1]   := t + a[i + 2^(d+1) - 1]

Depth (time):  O(log n)
Work:          O(n)

Blelloch is work-efficient: total operations are 2n - 2, same constant factor as the sequential version. It is the standard scan algorithm in NVIDIA's CUB library and in thrust::exclusive_scan.

Brent's Theorem and Speedup

By Brent's theorem, a parallel algorithm with work W and depth D runs in time T_p <= W/p + D on p processors. Plugging in:

  • Hillis-Steele: T_p = O(n log n / p + log n). Speedup limited by n / log n.
  • Blelloch: T_p = O(n / p + log n). Linear speedup up to p = O(n / log n) processors.

For GPUs with thousands of cores, Blelloch gives nearly linear speedup. For SIMD CPUs with a handful of lanes, the simpler Hillis-Steele is often competitive due to smaller constant factors and better memory access patterns.


I/O Complexity

In the external-memory model (Aggarwal-Vitter 1988), data is read in blocks of size B from a memory of size M, and the cost metric is the number of block transfers (I/Os).

Sequential prefix sum on disk:
  Read n integers, write n integers.
  I/O cost: O(n/B)  block transfers.

Random-access range queries on prefix array stored on disk:
  Per query: 2 block reads (one at index l, one at index r+1).
  I/O cost: O(q)  for q queries.

Difference array, then reconstruct:
  Updates: u random writes ( -> O(u) I/Os in the worst case).
  Reconstruction: O(n/B) sequential I/Os.
  Total: O(u + n/B).

The takeaway: prefix sums are extraordinarily I/O-efficient for batch construction (purely sequential) but degrade for random-access queries on cold disks. Modern systems pin the prefix array in memory or in SSD-friendly columnar layouts.

Cache-Oblivious Prefix Sum

The cache-oblivious version (recursive divide-and-conquer, equivalent in spirit to Blelloch on a serial machine) achieves O(n/B) I/Os without knowing B or M in advance. The recursion structure naturally exploits any cache hierarchy.


Summary

Prefix sums are the algorithmic shadow of the abelian-group structure of addition. The Inverse-Required Lemma formalizes the precise boundary: range queries via subtraction work iff the underlying operation has an inverse. The Fredman-Saks / Patrascu-Demaine lower bounds show that no dynamic structure breaks Omega(log n) per operation in the cell-probe model — Fenwick and segment trees are essentially optimal.

In parallel models, the picture shifts: Blelloch's work-efficient scan achieves O(log n) depth with O(n) work, making prefix sum a building block for sorting, stream compaction, and radix-sort-style partitioning on GPUs. In the external-memory model, prefix sums are I/O-optimal for batch builds — one sequential pass — which is why they survive in disk-resident analytics systems where richer dynamic structures would thrash cache.

Mastering these foundations turns "prefix sum" from a one-line trick into a principle: it tells you exactly when to reach for the technique, when to pivot to a sparse table or Fenwick tree, and how the same idea scales from a textbook array to a GPU kernel to a petabyte warehouse.
