Junior-Level Questions

Q1: Why do data structures matter? Give a concrete example.

Answer:

Data structures matter because the choice of data structure determines how fast your program runs. The same operation can be O(n) or O(1) depending on the data structure.

Concrete example: Checking if a username is already taken during registration.

  • With an array of 1 million usernames: O(n) = 1,000,000 comparisons per check.
  • With a hash set of 1 million usernames: O(1) = 1 comparison per check.

If 10,000 users register per minute, the array approach requires 10 billion comparisons per minute. The hash set approach requires 10,000. That is a million-fold difference from one data structure choice.


Q2: Name three real-world systems that depend on specific data structures.

Answer:

  1. Google Search uses an inverted index (hash map from words to document lists) to find relevant pages in milliseconds instead of scanning the entire web.
  2. GPS Navigation (Google Maps, Waze) uses a weighted graph to model roads and Dijkstra's algorithm with a priority queue (min-heap) to find shortest paths.
  3. Database indexes (PostgreSQL, MySQL) use B+ trees so that queries like SELECT * FROM users WHERE email = 'x' complete in O(log n) instead of O(n) full table scans.

Q3: What happens when you choose the wrong data structure?

Answer:

The program becomes unnecessarily slow, uses too much memory, or both.

Example: Storing 100,000 IP addresses in an array and checking every incoming request against it. With 10,000 requests/sec, that is 10^9 comparisons per second — the server cannot keep up. Switching to a hash set reduces it to 10,000 lookups per second, each taking O(1).

Another example: Using a linked list when you need frequent random access by index. Accessing the 50,000th element requires traversing 50,000 nodes (O(n)), while an array does it in O(1).


Q4: What is the relationship between data structures and Big-O complexity?

Answer:

The data structure you choose directly determines the Big-O complexity of your operations. The same logical task has different complexity depending on the DS:

The algorithm logic is trivial in all cases. The DS choice reduces complexity from O(n^2) to O(n).


Middle-Level Questions

Q5: How does data structure choice affect system performance beyond Big-O?

Answer:

Big-O captures asymptotic behavior but ignores constant factors that matter in practice:

  1. Cache performance: An array with O(n) scan can be faster than a balanced BST with O(log n) search for small n, because array elements are contiguous in memory and benefit from CPU cache prefetching. Linked structures cause cache misses on every pointer dereference.

  2. Memory overhead: A HashMap in Java uses ~48 bytes per entry (key object, value object, hash, pointer, bucket array). An array uses ~4-8 bytes per element. For 10 million entries, that is 480 MB vs 40-80 MB.

  3. Allocation pressure: Linked structures allocate many small objects, increasing GC pressure. Arrays allocate one contiguous block.

  4. Concurrency: Some DS are easier to make thread-safe. ConcurrentHashMap (lock striping) scales well. A concurrent balanced BST requires complex rebalancing under contention.


Q6: When would you choose a balanced BST (TreeMap) over a hash map?

Answer:

Choose a balanced BST / TreeMap when you need any of these:

  1. Sorted iteration — TreeMap iterates in key order. HashMap iterates in arbitrary order.
  2. Range queriessubMap(from, to) in O(log n + k). HashMap requires scanning all entries.
  3. Floor/Ceiling queries — Find the closest key <= or >= a given key in O(log n).
  4. Worst-case guarantees — TreeMap is O(log n) worst case. HashMap degrades to O(n) with bad hash functions or hash collision attacks.

Choose a HashMap when you only need key-value lookup/insert/delete and O(1) average time outweighs the need for ordering.


Q7: Explain the LRU Cache design and why it requires two data structures.

Answer:

An LRU (Least Recently Used) cache needs: - O(1) get by key — requires a hash map. - O(1) eviction of the least recently used item — requires a structure that tracks access order with O(1) removal and reinsertion.

A hash map alone cannot track access order efficiently. A linked list alone cannot provide O(1) lookup by key.

Combined: Hash map (key → linked list node) + doubly linked list (most recent at head, least recent at tail).

  • get(key): Hash map lookup O(1), move node to head O(1).
  • put(key, val): Hash map insert O(1), add node to head O(1). If over capacity, remove tail node O(1) and delete from hash map O(1).

Both operations are O(1). Neither data structure alone can achieve this.


Senior-Level Questions

Q8: How would you choose data structures for a real-time analytics dashboard?

Answer:

Requirements: ingest millions of events/sec, answer queries like "count of events in last 5 minutes by category" within 10 ms.

DS choices:

  1. Ingestion: Append-only log (Kafka-style). O(1) writes, sequential I/O, millions of writes/sec.

  2. Time-windowed counts: Sliding window with a circular buffer of per-second counters. O(1) increment, O(1) to read the 5-minute window sum. Fixed memory regardless of event volume.

  3. Category breakdown: Hash map from category string to counter. O(1) per increment.

  4. Approximate unique counts: HyperLogLog per category. O(1) add, O(1) cardinality estimate, ~12 KB per counter regardless of cardinality.

  5. Top-K categories: Min-heap of size K. O(log K) per update.

Why not a relational DB? At millions of events/sec, even an indexed table cannot keep up with the write throughput. Purpose-built in-memory data structures are required.


Q9: How do data structure choices differ for distributed systems vs single-node systems?

Professional-Level Questions

Q10: Explain the cell probe lower bound for the predecessor problem.

Answer:

In the cell probe model, memory is an array of w-bit cells. The cost of a data structure operation is the number of cells probed (read/written). Computation is free.

Predecessor problem: Given a set S of n integers from universe [U], answer predecessor queries (largest element in S that is <= query q).

Lower bound (Patrascu & Thorup, 2006): Any data structure using S = n * polylog(n) space requires query time:

t = Omega(min(log_w n, log log U))

where w = Theta(log U) is the word size.

This proves that fusion trees (achieving O(log_w n)) and van Emde Boas trees (achieving O(log log U)) are both optimal in their respective regimes. No data structure can do better.

Significance: This is one of the few problems where the upper and lower bounds match exactly, proving that our data structures are the best possible.


Q11: What are succinct data structures and why do they matter?

Answer:

A succinct data structure uses space equal to the information-theoretic minimum plus a lower-order term:

Space = B + o(B) bits, where B = ceil(log2(number of possible inputs))

Example: An ordered tree with n nodes. The number of distinct ordered trees is the n-th Catalan number, so the information-theoretic minimum is approximately 2n bits. The Balanced Parentheses representation uses 2n + o(n) bits and supports parent, child, subtree size queries in O(1).

Why they matter: At web scale, constant-factor space improvements translate to enormous savings. A graph with 10^11 edges stored with 8-byte pointers needs 800 GB. A succinct representation might use 25 GB while supporting O(1) adjacency queries — fitting in a single server's RAM instead of requiring a cluster.


Coding Challenge: Design a Time-Based Key-Value Store

Problem: Design a data structure that stores key-value pairs where each value has a timestamp, and supports: - set(key, value, timestamp) — Store the key-value pair at the given timestamp. - get(key, timestamp) — Return the value with the largest timestamp <= the given timestamp.

Timestamps are strictly increasing for each key.

Constraints: Both operations should be efficient.

Complexity Analysis:

Why these DS: The hash map gives O(1) key lookup. The sorted list/TreeMap enables O(log n) binary search for the floor timestamp. Using an unsorted list would make get() O(n). Using only a TreeMap (without the outer HashMap) would make key lookup O(log k) where k is the number of keys.


Remember: In interviews, always explain WHY you chose a data structure, not just what it is. The reasoning — matching DS properties to problem requirements — is what interviewers evaluate.
