Aim for ~2 minutes. Lead with a one-line headline so the interviewer knows where you're going: "I'll tell you about the time we cut p99 latency by 60% during a Black-Friday-style spike."

Strong approach: Reach for one of four buckets and pick the most honest, defensible number: 1. Performance/cost — latency percentiles, throughput, infra cost (e.g. "cut EC2 spend ~$4k/mo by right-sizing pods"). 2. Reliability — incident count, MTTR, error rate, SLO attainment. 3. Velocity — deploy frequency, lead time, reduced on-call pages, hours saved per week across the team. 4. Business — conversion, churn, revenue unblocked, customers retained.

If you genuinely lack a clean number, estimate transparently: "We didn't instrument it precisely, but the manual reconciliation took roughly two engineer-days a month, which the automation removed." Interviewers respect a defensible estimate over a fabricated metric.

Mistake to avoid: Vanity metrics ("wrote 5k lines", "closed 30 tickets") or numbers you can't explain when probed. If you say 60%, be ready to say 60% of what, measured how.

Strong structure (let the four phases be your STAR Action): - Detect: how you found out (alert, customer report) and how fast. - Mitigate: restore service first — roll back, fail over, shed load, feature-flag off. Stop the bleeding before chasing root cause. - Root cause: after recovery, what actually broke. - Prevent: the durable fix and the systemic guardrail.

Emphasize that mitigation precedes diagnosis, and that you communicated to stakeholders throughout.

Example skeleton: "At 02:00 PagerDuty fired on elevated 5xx (detect). A bad deploy had introduced an unbounded goroutine leak; I rolled back to the last green release within ~8 minutes to restore service (mitigate), posting status updates every few minutes. Example skeleton: "After the goroutine-leak outage I wrote the postmortem. I kept it blameless — the deploy that triggered it passed all our checks, so the real finding was that our checks didn't cover goroutine growth (S/T/A). Strong structure: Pick a system where you owned the full lifecycle and make the breadth visible: - Design: the requirements and the architecture you chose, with trade-offs. - Build & ship: how you delivered incrementally. - Operate: SLOs, monitoring, on-call, how it behaved in production. - Evolve: how you scaled or refactored it as needs changed.

Quantify scale (RPS, data volume, users) and reliability (SLO attainment).

Example skeleton: "I owned our event-driven order-processing service in Go (S/T). I designed it around an idempotent consumer over Kafka with an outbox pattern for exactly-once-ish delivery, chose Postgres for the source of truth, and shipped it behind a flag to 5% of traffic first (A — design/build). The credibility signal is naming the downside you accepted on purpose.

Example skeleton: "We had to choose between gRPC and REST for internal service-to-service comms (S/T). I weighed type-safety and performance (gRPC) against tooling familiarity and debuggability (REST).
